Elevator in the Brain Hotel

I walked into Java on Sherman and ordered my semi-usual English Breakfast Tea. I looked up at the "Daily Specials" sign, which had a moon, rainbow, purple clouds, and the words "Mom's Favorite" drawn on it in chalk. The "special" was listed as "Elevator in the Brain Hotel", which was [not] drawn in ornate, psychedelic calligraphy [but in the normal handwriting of its artist]. I asked a community character and current Java barista what "Elevator in the Brain Hotel" meant, and she cupped her mouth in my direction and whispered, "high kids working on the weekend".

  1. Strange story about how I came across your blog, but I would like to let you know that you have been misinformed. I work at Java on Sherman, and I am the employee that made the picture on the "Daily Specials" sign. "elevator in the brain hotel" is a phrase out of a song by Donovan that happened to be stuck in my head when I made the picture. And no, I was not a "high kid working on the weekend" that made that. Also what you described as being "ornate, psychedelic calligraphy" is just my handwriting in chalk. I feel that you have provided information that may cause some false assumptions about Java on Sherman or the employees and I just wanted to clarify that for you.

  2. Hi anonymous (now I know your real name, since I came down to Java and introduced myself!). Thank you so much for clearing this up for me. I apologize for embellishing the ornateness and psychedelic quality to your hand writing - it was entirely unwarranted. I have taken a picture (forthcoming) of the object in question so as to accurately depict the exact hue, degree of waviness, lightness, and shape of the artistic elements present in the artifact. Thank you for entertaining my apology, and may Java enjoy a long and pleasant reputation despite my error!

  4. Also, "mom's favorite" is permanently on the sign and the soup of the day is generally listed below it.
